The conflict has escalated into what UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg described as a return to a state of ‘full-scale war.’ Following deadly ballistic missile and drone attacks on terminals 3 and 4 at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the Saudi-led coalition launched the ‘Dawn of Yemen’ operation, destroying 136 military targets to dismantle the Houthi ballistic missile network. A major ballistic missile attack on October 10, 2026, targeting King Khalid International Airport, resulted in significant casualties. While initial reports cited 13 deaths, subsequent figures indicate the death toll may have reached 18, with over 300 injuries. King Khalid International Airport has faced approximately 20 attacks since the beginning of October. The strikes caused widespread aviation disruption, leading major carriers to suspend or reroute flights and prompting the FAA and EASA to issue warnings. Saudi authorities extended the closure of Riyadh’s international airport through October 17. On October 13, tensions intensified as a ballistic missile struck a Saudi Aramco administrative complex in Dhahran, causing a ‘limited fire.’ In Riyadh, air defenses intercepted cruise missiles, but falling debris injured four people and damaged 15 homes. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Sarea claimed responsibility, stating strikes were retaliatory measures against coalition operations targeting fuel depots in Sanaa. Recent updates indicate the death toll from Houthi strikes on infrastructure has risen to at least 19, with 364 injuries reported. On October 15, two Houthi ballistic missiles struck Aden International Airport near a Yemenia Airways aircraft preparing for takeoff. While no casualties were reported, Yemeni officials characterized the strike as a violation of international humanitarian law. Houthi sources claimed the operation targeted a Saudi-led forces command center near the airport. On October 16, Houthi rebels launched two ballistic missiles at Aden International Airport, the second such attack on the facility in less than a week.
