Security operations and criminal violence have escalated in Guerrero, Mexico. Following raids in Tlapa de Comonfort, Chilapa de Álvarez, and Atlixtac involving the Mexican Army and National Guard, authorities released 66 individuals after verifying they were legitimate municipal and traffic police officers. However, legal proceedings continue against several officers for abuse of authority and deprivation of liberty, and the Director of Mobility and Transport for Tlapa remains in custody for suspected aggravated extortion. Violence has intensified following the death of National Guard agent Eduardo Bustos Pérez, whose body was found alongside three others in Plan de Lima. Before his death, Bustos Pérez released a video alleging that high-ranking officials in the National Guard and the State Attorney General's Office were accepting bribes from the ‘Los Tlacos’ criminal group to facilitate their expansion against rivals ‘Los Ardillos’. He specifically named officials including a ‘Cabo Medina’ and a commander known as ‘Montoro’ as recipients of regular payments. In response, the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) confirmed it is collaborating with authorities to investigate these corruption claims. Security forces have increased their presence in the region, deploying hundreds of personnel, aircraft, and vehicles, while separate operations resulted in the detention of 16 alleged members of ‘Los Ardillos’. In response to the agent's death, the criminal group ‘Los Rusos’ issued threats via banners in Acapulco and Coyuca de Benítez. The group targeted Secretary of Public Security Omar García Harfuch and members of the Navy, Army, and State Police, warning of attacks on security patrols in areas such as Zona Diamante and Puerto Marqués. ‘Los Rusos’ also demanded the release of their leader, Ulises ‘N’, alias ‘El Amarillo’, who was detained in Puebla. The Mexican Secretariat of National Defense has stated it will cooperate with investigations into the corruption allegations.
