Three weeks after the 7.4 magnitude earthquake near San José del Palmar on August 10, 2026, Colombia has transitioned from rescue operations to a massive reconstruction phase. The disaster has resulted in at least ~~331~~ 335 deaths, ~~4,497~~ 4,500 injuries, and has affected over 452,000 people across 16 departments. On September 19, the Chocó department experienced two earthquakes~~ Istmina, Chocó, and a third sequence in ~~Istmina with magnitudes~~ Chaparral, Tolima. In Istmina, experts have identified a swarm of ~~4.6~~ more than 1,500 events occurring at depths between 30 and ~~3.1. Additionally, the Tolima department reported~~ 70 kilometers. In Tolima, a ~~series of eight seismic movements~~ 4.0 magnitude earthquake on September ~~20,~~ 21 triggered preventive evacuations in Ibagué, including the Tolima Governor's office. While recent movements, including a ~~4.1~~ 3.3 magnitude tremor in ~~Chaparral.~~ rural Istmina on September 24, have not caused reported injuries or structural damage, officials note that activity could still increase.
