The Tyrrhenian Sea and the Calabrian coast have experienced significant seismic activity characterized by deep-seated earthquakes. In June 2026, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 250 kilometers off the coast of Cosenza. Although the tremor was felt across Southern Italy in cities such as Naples, Bari, and Palermo, no injuries or structural collapses were reported. In October 2026, further activity was recorded, including included a magnitude 2.4 earthquake near Palmi and a magnitude 4.7 earthquake at a depth of 372 kilometers in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea. Additionally, a magnitude 2.8 earthquake occurred near the northeastern Sicilian coast in May 2026 and a magnitude 2.4 event near Revine Lago in October 2026. A new seismic sequence occurred in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea on October 23, 2026, centered near the Aeolian Islands. This swarm included a primary earthquake with magnitude estimates between 5.0 and 5.7, occurring at a depth of approximately 9 to 24 kilometers. The main shock was preceded by tremors with magnitudes of 3.3, 4.3, and 3.6. The intensity of the activity triggered precautionary evacuations of schools and public offices in Palermo, the courthouse in Trapani, and buildings in the Aeolian Islands, including Alicudi and Lipari. While an orange alert for tsunami risk was issued for coastal areas and a rockfall was reported in Filicudi, no widespread structural damage or injuries have been confirmed. Geologists attribute these events to the subduction of the Ionian/African lithosphere beneath the Calabrian arc. According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the main event on October 23 was part of a larger swarm consisting of over 40 seismic events recorded since October 20. While the orange tsunami warning was later downgraded in some areas, civil protection authorities advised coastal municipalities to maintain high readiness and monitor shorelines.
