Studio Qzil is producing the anime adaptation of the video game ‘Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’, titled ‘Sekiro: No Defeat’. Set during Japan’s Sengoku period, the story follows the protagonist Wolf as he protects the Divine Heir, Kuro, amidst political conflict and forbidden powers. Initial promotional materials released by the studio included two videos highlighting character designs and the relationship between Sekiro and Kuro. Subsequent updates provided new character posters and further details regarding the voice cast. Voice actor Daisuke Namikawa, portraying Wolf, noted his use of the Japanese concept of ‘ma’—intentional silence and space—to convey the character’s stoicism. Voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda also provided commentary regarding the franchise lore, specifically mentioning the ‘ohagi’ snacks associated with the character Emma. Recent updates reveal that the film, produced by ~~KADOKAWA~~ KADOKAWA, Qzil. la, and Arch and directed by Kenichi Kutsuna, will feature full 2D hand-drawn animation with character designs by Takahiro Kishida and music by Shūta Hasunuma. New promotional footage showcases background art meticulously hand-painted by Yuji Kaneko of Studio Aozora, utilizing a heavy, ink-wash aesthetic to depict settings such as Ashina Castle. The narrative will follow the protagonists as they seek the ‘Resurrection Blade’ to combat the deadly ‘Dragonrot’ disease. Following a limited theatrical release in Japan that began on September 4, 2026, and screenings at the Annecy Festival and the Fantasia International Film Festival, an eight-episode episodic version of ‘Sekiro: No Defeat’ is scheduled to premiere in January 2027. This ~~version~~ version, which offers expanded content beyond the cinematic theatrical version, will be available for worldwide streaming exclusively on Crunchyroll, excluding Japan, China, Korea, Russia, and Belarus. The series features a screenplay by Takuya Satou and includes Miyuki Satou as Kuro and Kenjiro Tsuda as Genichiro Ashina. While the theatrical film was a re-edited version of the full series, the producer, ARCH, issued an apology for not previously disclosing that the film was a re-edited version of the planned eight-episode series.
