Seminci International Film Festival controversy and opening
Overview
The 71st edition of the Seminci International Film Festival in Valladolid has opened, featuring 208 titles and a competition for the Golden Spike prize. The event is currently led by interim co-directors Mariona Viader and Javier H. Estrada following the death of director José Luis Cienfuegos.
Prior to the opening, the festival became a subject of political debate. Valladolid Mayor Jesús Julio Carnero defended the event as a ‘space of freedom’ against criticisms from the regional Minister of Culture, Alberto Díaz Pico, who suggested the festival required improved ‘ideological neutrality.’ Carnero and the festival’s directors maintained that cinema is an artistic expression defined by personal preference rather than political alignment.
