In early October 2026, education groups in Senegal called for a peaceful 2026-2027 school year. The National Coalition for Education for All (CNEPT) urged collaboration between authorities, teachers, and parents to avoid historical disruptions caused by strikes. Simultaneously, the Democratic Union of Teachers of Senegal (UDEN) demanded that the government honor all previously agreed-upon commitments and deadlines to maintain trust with educators. By mid-October, the Minister of National Education, Moustapha Guirassy, reported that 99% of the points in the agreement protocol with education unions had been addressed. He cited specific progress, such as the full payment of indemnities for external trainers at Regional Centers for Training Education Personnel (CRFPE) for the 2023–2025 period. Despite this progress, strike orders had been announced period and a payment rate for the start of the school year. end-of-examination indemnities exceeding 75%. Guirassy called on teachers to lift the strike mandate, citing the need mandates to preserve the school system and the country’s image ahead of the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games. On October 20, the Free Teachers’ Union of Senegal / Authentic (SELS/Authentique) announced it would not participate in the 72-hour strike decreed by the G7 inter-union. General Secretary Pape Mbaye Marie Sylla stated the timing was inappropriate given that the school year is only in its second week and many schools are already facing teacher shortages, flooding, and a lack of desks. SELS/Authentique noted it had not signed the contested protocol and called for sincere dialogue regarding retirement pensions, the retirement age, career management, and salary inequities.
