Senegal’s First Lady, Marie Khone Faye, has engaged in both immediate humanitarian relief and long-term developmental initiatives. Following heavy rains that caused flooding in areas such as Yoff and Thiaroye-sur-Mer, Faye distributed 400 water pumps to assist victims. This relief effort drew criticism on social media due to the branding on the equipment, which featured her image and the text ‘Motopompe offerte par la Première Dame du Sénégal’ (Water pump donated by the First Lady of Senegal). Critics argued the labeling represented a “personalization of humanitarian aid.” Expanding her scope to regional development, Faye also launched the ‘Building Resilience’ campaign in Dakar under the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OPDAD). Attended by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and several other African First Ladies, Faye, the campaign focuses on education, economic empowerment, health, and the protection of women’s and girls’ rights to combat the impacts of climate change and conflict. During the launch, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye emphasized that gender equality serves as a “pillar of the ‘Senegal 2050’ national transformation agenda.” The event also highlighted OPDAD’s diplomatic efforts in securing a United Nations resolution to designate November 27 as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early, and Forced Marriage.
