Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has called on the nation’s youth to transition from being mere consumers of foreign artificial intelligence to becoming active leaders in digital transformation. During the installation of the Senegal Youth Advisory Council, Council (Ccjs), which comprises 1,227 members, Faye warned that AI technologies are not neutral, as they are developed elsewhere with different languages and values. He emphasized the need for local actors to develop tools that incorporate Senegalese languages and respect national values. In addition to technological sovereignty, the President addressed digital social behavior, urging more responsible use of social media. He criticized the prevalence of lies and insults on digital platforms, stating that while debate is welcome, online behavior should not undermine social cohesion. These remarks drew a political response from Ngagne Demba Touré, who suggested that the administration’s concerns regarding social media might stem from the platforms serving as venues for popular discontent. Expanding on the necessity of technological advancement, Professor Mary Teuw Niane has called for massive investment in AI and a profound restructuring of education systems in Senegal and across Africa. Niane argues that mastering AI is essential to prevent African youth from being marginalized by global technological transformations. She emphasized that academic excellence alone is insufficient, suggesting that the entire educational spectrum—from preschool to higher education—must be redesigned to anticipate future needs and move beyond outdated curricula.
