The medical labor dispute in Senegal has escalated as multiple unions prepare for coordinated industrial actions. The Autonomous Union of Doctors, Pharmacists, and Dentists of Senegal (SAMES) has scheduled a 48-hour total strike for September 8 and 9. This action follows the expiration of a strike notice on August 9 and responds to the government’s failure to address demands submitted in 2023 regarding indemnity regimes, professional training, and healthcare infrastructure. In Ziguinchor, the SAMES branch confirmed its participation in the September 8-9 strike following a period of truce. Secretary General Dr. Marc Manga stated that the “silence from authorities indicates a lack of consideration” for medical professionals. Specific demands from this branch include the establishment of a special status for medical staff, automatic recruitment upon completion of training, raising the age of tenure to 40, and increasing retirement pensions to potentially reach 80% of net salary. Following these actions, SAMES announced a new 48-hour nationwide strike for September 23 and 24, 2026. This decision follows an extraordinary session on September 18, where the union reported a 99.3% observance rate during its previous strike. Despite a meeting with the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, SAMES stated that no “concrete progress or verifiable commitments” have been made. The union noted that this upcoming movement must be observed “in strict respect of emergencies.” Adding to the tension, the And Gueusseum Alliance of autonomous health unions has announced its own 48-hour total strike for September 17 and 18, stating there will be “no emergency care coverage and no minimum service maintained” across the national territory. The alliance has since announced its 16th plan of action, which includes a total 48-hour strike scheduled for October 1 and 2, 2026, to seek the settlement of social liabilities and housing allowances for contract workers.
