Senegal private higher education accreditation dispute

Overview

Senegal’s Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI) identified 34 private educational institutions and branches that are not authorized to provide training within the Bachelor to Doctorate (LMD) system. The initial list included various entities across Dakar, Ziguinchor, Saint-Louis, Thiès, Tambacounda, and Kaolack, as well as strategic studies centers in Ouakam.

Following the release of this list, the Ministry addressed the resulting controversy. Professor Benoit Tine, director of private higher education, stated that formal notices have been served to these establishments to cease activities related to the LMD system, warning that students at these schools may find their qualifications unrecognized by the state.

However, Director General Mamadou Sidibé clarified that the document was an “internal working tool” that was “leaked without official authorization.” The Ministry noted that the verification process is still ongoing and has launched an internal investigation to determine how the document was released before official validation.
