Senegal solar irrigation adoption efforts

Overview

In Senegal, agricultural producers are seeking to transition from expensive fossil fuel-powered irrigation to solar energy to reduce operational costs. In the Walo region, farmers report high daily consumption of diesel and gasoline to maintain drip irrigation for various crops, noting that despite abundant sunlight, the high initial cost of solar installations has slowed adoption.

To address these economic barriers, the Agence nationale des énergies renouvelables (Aner) has launched an initiative to deploy solar pumping systems. Aner Director General Diouma Kobor stated that high energy and water costs hinder local producers from competing with imported goods. The agency is working with financial institutions to make photovoltaic technology and solar-powered cold storage more accessible by structuring monthly costs to be lower than traditional fuel or electricity bills, thereby removing the need for large upfront capital.
