Mark Tyler Hilland, a 47-year-old former RCMP constable, faced sentencing was sentenced in Nanaimo, British Columbia, after pleading guilty to breach of trust by a public officer. The charge originated stemmed from an incident in on July 2024 where 2, 2024, when Hilland, while on duty and in uniform, interacted with an Indigenous woman who had previously been involved in the sex trade. Following Court records indicate that during the conclusion of his shift, encounter, the woman was propositioned by another individual after Hilland was called away to a different police matter. Later that night, Hilland visited the woman at her residence residence—having been provided with her contact information and door code—and the two engaged in consensual sex. During the legal proceedings, Crown counsel Andrew McLean requested described the interaction as “negative” and noted that it “triggered traumatic memories from her past involvement in the sex trade.” While the Crown sought a suspended sentence that would result in a criminal record, noting that the interaction triggered traumatic memories for the woman. While the defense argued for a conditional discharge, Judge Reginald Harris ultimately granted a conditional discharge. Hilland will avoid a criminal record provided he successfully completes 18 months of probation.
