Sentencing of Kolthoum Akbari in Iran

Overview

Kolthoum Akbari, a 56-year-old woman nicknamed Iran’s ‘Black Widow,’ has been sentenced to death in Mazandaran Province following a confession to the murders of at least 10 men. The killings reportedly occurred over nearly two decades.

Authorities state that Akbari targeted elderly men, often widowers, through ‘sigheh’—temporary marriage contracts. Investigators determined she would administer sedatives, diabetes medications, or industrial rubbing alcohol to her victims before suffocating them with a towel to mimic natural deaths. The motive is believed to be financial gain, specifically the collection of gold, cash, and dowry assets.

The investigation intensified after the 2023 death of Akbari’s 82-year-old husband, Gholamreza Babaei, whose children filed a complaint after he reported feeling near-unconsciousness after consuming beverages prepared by her.

Akbari received 10 death sentences and an additional prison sentence for attempted homicide. Under Sharia law, several families have opted for ‘qisas’ (eye-for-an-eye) punishment, while at least one family has agreed to accept ‘diya’ (blood money). The sentence remains subject to appeal.
