Sentencing of Yaw Gahornu for child defilement

Overview

Yaw Gahornu, an 87-year-old man, was sentenced to 20 years in prison with hard labour for the defilement of a nine-year-old girl in Ofankor, Accra.

The abuse occurred multiple times between July and August 2026. The investigation by the Tesano Divisional Police Command revealed that the perpetrator allegedly threatened to kill the child if she informed her mother. The incident was discovered after the victim’s mother noticed bloodstains on the child’s clothing and the child disclosed the abuse. Additionally, Gahornu’s granddaughter reportedly witnessed an incident and informed relatives.

The case was heard at the Gender-Based Violence Court at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) Headquarters. The court emphasized that the seriousness of the offense and the need for deterrence warranted a custodial sentence.
