Seoul district and South Korean waste management initiatives
Seoul districts are implementing various initiatives to improve resource circulation and waste management. In Gangnam-gu, the ‘Well-ssu’ campaign has led to a 2.3% decrease in household waste and a 5.8% increase in recycling volume between February and July 2026. The program utilizes educational outreach and a component analysis system that provides residents with a ‘report card’ to categorize their waste separation status. In Gwanak-gu, the district is expanding a specialized recycling bag program targeting over 62,000 households in older single-family and multi-family homes. This initiative, which has contributed to increasing the recycling sorting rate from 57.4% to 68.7% since 2021, involves distributing specific bags for transparent PET bottles, vinyl, and other materials. Recent reports indicate a significant surge in paper pack collection, with totals from the first half of the year nearly matching the previous year’s annual collection. These efforts are supported by a resource circulation club of 254 members who guide residents on proper separation. Beyond Seoul, Geoje has introduced technology-driven solutions by installing two AI-based, barrier-free unmanned collection machines for transparent PET bottles at Aju Stadium. These machines utilize AI and IoT technology to automatically identify recyclables and are designed for accessibility for the elderly and wheelchair users. Participants can earn 10 points per bottle, up to a daily limit of 20, which are exchangeable for cash via the Superbin application.
