Sepahiyan-e Mihan opposition in Badakhshan
Overview
In July 2026, the Sepahiyan-e Mihan (also referred to as Sepah-e Mihan or Homeland Soldiers Front), a newly emerged armed group, seized the district headquarters of Yaftal-e Payin (or Yaftal-e Sofla) in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province. Led by former special forces commander Abdul Qayum Malang, the group reportedly comprises approximately 1,300 to 1,400 individuals, including former security personnel, local youths, and students.
The group utilized a Friday holiday to infiltrate the district while security forces were reduced. Although the fighters held the building for several hours and claimed to have seized equipment, Taliban forces re-established control shortly after. Taliban army chief of staff Fasihuddin Fitrat dismissed the operation as a “publicity stunt” by a small group that lacked the capacity to resist.
Analysts have noted that this event represents the first recorded instance of an opposition group successfully penetrating Taliban defenses and temporarily capturing a district administration since the Taliban took power in August 2021. The incident is viewed as a symbolically significant development indicating the emergence of disorganized armed opposition within the country.
