Commemorations surrounding the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks have focused on honoring fallen first responders and the animals that assisted in recovery efforts. In early September, the NYPD rededicated a refurbished memorial wall at the Emergency Service Unit (ESU) training center in Brooklyn. The memorial honors 45 ESU members killed in the line of duty, including 14 officers who died during the attacks. Commissioner Jessica Tisch described these officers as “the tip of the NYPD’s spear,” highlighting their role in entering the Twin Towers to rescue civilians. On the anniversary itself, tributes extended to search and rescue dogs, such as Apollo and Trakr. To honor their legacy, a bronze statue was commissioned for Bretagne, the last surviving search dog from the site. Additionally, the NYPD continues a tradition of naming K-9 units after fallen officers, including those who died from 9/11-related illnesses. Recent honors include naming active units such as Moira Ann, for Officer Moira Smith, and K-9 Ragner, for Lt. William Wanser III, to participate in memorial services and public duties. Firefighters also maintained the tradition of stair climbs, symbolically ascending approximately 2,200 steps in full gear to honor the 343 FDNY members who lost their lives during the attacks.
