SERAP defamation judgment appeal
Overview
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, are appealing a May 5 judgment from the Abuja High Court. The original ruling ordered the defendants to pay between N100 million and N101 million in damages for defaming two Department of State Services (DSS) officials, Sarah John and Gabriel Ogundele.
The High Court found that SERAP’s claims regarding an “invasion, forceful entry and harassment” of their office in September 2024 were inaccurate and injured the professional reputations of the officials.
Following a scheduled hearing at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, the proceedings were adjourned. The adjournment was requested because the appellant’s brief was filed late and a document was omitted. A three-member panel, led by Judge Danlami Senchi, vacated its previous decision to reserve judgment on SERAP’s separate appeal, ruling that both appeals must be heard together. Further proceedings are set for October 13.
