July 2026 data showed Serbian towns logged a record number of days in 2025 when PM10 concentrations exceeded legal limits, with Novi Pazar topping the list at 127 days. The report warned that air‑pollution‑related air-pollution-related premature deaths approach 10 000 10,000 annually and projected that, even with planned mitigation measures, deaths would remain well above EU levels by 2030. Serbia also lacks a daily legal limit for finer PM2.5 particles, hampering enforcement. In early August 2026, six large wildfires burned across the country. The most extensive blaze spread over more than 700 ha in the Deliblatska sand dunes near Šumarak, while a second major fire burned dry vegetation on Stolovi mountain. A third fire in Maglič consumed about 170 ha. Authorities deployed 484 personnel from the Ministry of Interior, emergency services, the army, volunteer fire brigades and forestry services, and helicopter units dropped up to 270 tonnes of water. No casualties have been reported, but the fires threaten local settlements, agricultural land and natural reserves, and 24‑hour 24-hour watches continue. The combined effect of chronic particulate pollution and the expanding wildfires further degrades air quality, pushing local PM10 levels into a “worsened” third‑class third-class category and straining emergency resources. By August 8, the wildfire situation escalated. In Serbia, the blaze in the Deliblatska Peščara nature reserve expanded to approximately 1,500 hectares, forcing the evacuation of residents in the Šumarak area as flames approached homes. Fire crews are working to establish firebreaks to contain the spread. Wildfires have also impacted neighboring Balkan countries, including regions in Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Bulgaria.
