Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that former world number one tennis player Jelena Janković will serve as an ambassador and promoter for the EXPO 2027 specialized exhibition in Belgrade. The event, themed ‘Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All’, is viewed by Vučić as a vital driver for national infrastructure and development, with expectations that it will set records for international participation. Janković expressed that she is honored to represent the country and aims to present Serbian culture and traditions to the world with pride. While government officials, including Miloš Vučević, defended the appointment as a moment of national pride, the decision drew criticism from certain domestic media outlets that characterized the move as a “political gesture”. Following the announcement, Serbia’s Minister without portfolio for gender equality, Tatjana Macura, condemned the “insulting and derogatory messages” directed at Janković. Macura stated Janković, stating that political differences should not justify the “public discredit or personal harassment of successful women”. During an official meeting in Belgrade, President Vučić detailed the scale of the exhibition, which is expected to host approximately 140 participating countries and 8,000 events over a 93-day period. He emphasized that the event is driving significant investments in transport, including new roads, railways, and airport connections. Finance Minister Siniša Mali added that all seven exhibition halls are projected to be completed ahead of schedule.
