In early August 2026, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić conducted a tour of Serbian-populated areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasizing regional unity and pledging €142 million for projects in Republika Srpska (RS). During his visit, he met with RS leaders, commemorated the 1995 Petrovačka road bombing, and promised significant aid to the Jezero municipality for infrastructure and housing. However, the trip triggered a security dispute. On 3 August, a group of approximately thirty armed members of the RS Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (SAJ) entered a forest near Bugojno in civilian clothing without notifying local police. Bosnian Defence Minister Zukan Helez accused Vučić of being accompanied by unregistered, armed men on quad-bikes, calling the incident a violation of security procedures. Vučić dismissed these claims as “lies,” asserting the men were RS SAJ members and that he required no permission for his visit. RS officials defended the security arrangements, labeling Helez an extremist. By 6 August, Vučić defended Serbia’s independent foreign policy and dismissed the criticisms as politically motivated. Concurrently, investigations were raised regarding Helez’s official international travels. Tensions also persisted regarding Kosovo. Vučić criticized Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti over the Ibar River bridge in Mitrovica, calling recent actions “total absurdity” and expressing intent to contact NATO regarding KFOR forces.
