Following the seizure of a rubber boat at Praia da Foz in Sesimbra, Portuguese authorities ruled out initial reports that the vessel was used for a migrant landing. While early reports suggested a group of 20 to 30 people had disembarked near Aldeia do Meco, investigators found no testimony to confirm such an event. Evidence found on the vessel, including fuel jerrycans and Spanish-branded water bottles, led investigators to shift focus toward narcotics trafficking or fuel smuggling. The boat was moved to the Port of Setúbal for forensic examination. As the investigation progressed, Internal Security Minister Luís Neves noted that the Sesimbra coastline is frequently used for landing illegal materials, prompting calls for intensified coastal surveillance. Concurrently, the Association of GNR Professionals warned that a shortage of personnel and resources within the Guarda Nacional Republicana is hindering responses to international narcotics networks, which have reportedly increased their use of vessels, some of which are manned by armed individuals. Recent maritime operations across Portugal have reinforced these concerns. In Caminha, the Polícia Judiciária and Spanish Guardia Civil detained a foreign national after a high-speed boat with four outboard motors was run aground at Moledo beach; a small amount of narcotics was recovered. In Quarteira, the GNR seized a boat containing over 7,000 liters of gasoline in 291 jerrycans, alongside surveillance equipment. These incidents, alongside the ongoing Sesimbra investigation, highlight the persistent challenges posed by high-speed vessels used in maritime drug trafficking.
