A bomb explosion in Sevastopol, Crimea, killed Robert Shageyev (also identified as Robert Mansurovici Shageev), a high-ranking Russian naval officer and former Ukrainian submarine commander who defected to Russia after the 2014 annexation of Crimea. The device was reportedly hidden in a trash bin on Stoletovsky Prospekt/Boulevard and detonated as the officer was walking near a bench or descending a staircase. Russian authorities arrested 32-year-old Margarita Reut in connection with the assassination. Investigators allege that Reut, a biologist from Yaroslavl who has also worked as a travel ~~agent,~~ agent and appeared on escort websites, acted under instructions from Ukrainian intelligence services and was paid via cryptocurrency. While Russian officials, including Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev, have made these claims, Ukrainian authorities have not officially confirmed involvement or claimed responsibility for the attack. According to the FSB, Reut showed no remorse during questioning and had allegedly planned to flee the country via Sochi following the incident. She is currently facing terrorism charges and a potential prison sentence of up to 30 years.
