Severe flooding and extreme weather have impacted Crete since October 1, causing widespread damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and residential areas. In Xyloskalos, Chania, rainfall reached up to 440mm. The Fire Service has responded to hundreds of calls, including 101 evacuations and 96 water pumping operations. In the Lasithi Plateau, water depths exceeding three meters have submerged over 5,000 stremmata of land, destroying more than 20,000 tons of potatoes and causing millions of euros in damages. Beyond crops, the floods have caused significant losses in livestock and damaged irrigation networks. As the crisis continues, multiple municipalities have declared states of emergency. In Hersonissos, Mayor Zacharias Doxastakis has initiated emergency procedures, while the Municipality of Apokoronas has requested €2.6 million in aid. In Heraklion, the communities of Vassileia and Skalania have been added to the list of emergency zones. By October 8, 2026, the General Directorate for the Recovery of the Effects of Natural Disasters had inspected 137 buildings across five municipalities, including Ierapetra, Heraklion, Mylopotamos, Amari, and the Lasithi Plateau. Of these, 127 were classified as ‘green’ (safe), 10 as ‘yellow’ (cautionary), and none as ‘red’ (unsafe). On October 10, 2026, Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas announced that damage assessments for homes and businesses are expected to conclude by the following week. He stated that the first round of aid for households, specifically for damaged appliances, will be distributed to mayors within ten days, provided documentation is complete, while aid for businesses is expected within fifteen days. Tournas characterized the situation as a direct experience of climate change, noting, “At this moment we are truly experiencing climate change. We have fires in the north and floods in the south.”
