Severe storms and torrential rainfall caused widespread devastation across the Calabria region, specifically impacting Melito Porto Salvo and the Grecanica area. The extreme weather resulted in landslides, collapsed roads, and significant infrastructure damage. In Melito Porto Salvo, flooding swept vehicles into the sea and inundated residential areas, while the Tiberio Evoli hospital emergency room was temporarily filled with mud before returning to operation. Following these events, the local government in Melito di Porto Salvo declared a state of emergency. The crisis has highlighted broader regional vulnerabilities, including damage to water networks, sewage systems, and public lighting. Political groups have criticized the regional government, calling for an urgent structural plan to address deteriorating road conditions and insufficient maintenance of drainage and mountain community protections. Recent extreme weather has extended the impact to the Crotone hinterland, specifically the Marchesato and Alto Marchesato regions. Record rainfall, reaching approximately 235mm in Belvedere Spinello, caused the Neto River to overflow and breach embankments near Altilia. This has resulted in significant infrastructure failure, including a large sinkhole that collapsed the SP30 road connecting Belvedere Spinello to the SS107. The SS107 ‘Silana Crotonese’ was also closed due to debris and flooding. Industrial zones in Polligrone and Barretta have been inundated with mud and water, threatening local businesses and agricultural greenhouses. Mayor Antonio Amato has activated the Operational Coordination Center (Coc) to manage the emergency, with the Vigili del Fuoco, Carabinieri, and Civil Protection providing on-site assistance.
