Severe weather and flooding in Mexico City
Overview
Following reports of cloudy skies and light rain in Mexico City on October 26, the region experienced a significant escalation in weather severity.
On the night of October 27, heavy rainfall and intense electrical activity struck the city, leading to widespread flooding and infrastructure challenges. Authorities issued various meteorological warnings, including a ‘Purple Alert’—the highest level—in the Benito Juárez borough due to forecasts of precipitation exceeding 70 millimeters. Other boroughs, such as Álvaro Obregón, Cuauhtémoc, and Miguel Hidalgo, were placed under ‘Orange Alerts’, while Coyoacán and Iztapalapa received ‘Yellow Alerts’.
Severe flooding was reported in the Narvarte neighborhood, where vehicles became trapped in rising waters, as well as in Del Valle, Santa Cruz Atoyac, and Letrán Valle. Emergency services responded to incidents involving fallen trees and accumulated water in residential areas including Independencia, Portales, and Santa María Nonoalco.
