Chile continues to face diverse and severe weather conditions across multiple regions. In the northern areas, specifically Antofagasta, Atacama, and Tarapacá, a high-altitude disturbance is expected to bring significant rainfall and snowfall. Meteorologists warn of potential flash floods, landslides, and increased river flows. In the Tarapacá Region, authorities from Senapred and the Regional Presidential Delegation have declared a preventive alert to coordinate emergency services. This alert addresses anticipated moderate snowfall in high mountain areas and rainfall in the precordillera and Pampa del Tamarugal sectors between August 10 and August 12. Potential electrical storms are also expected in these areas during the same period. A Regional Technical Table has been convened to evaluate vulnerable points in the Tamarugal province and the Iquique coast, while residents are advised to avoid high-risk zones. Simultaneously, central and southern Chile are facing a cold spell. Frost warnings have been issued for regions ranging from Valparaíso to Biobío, with temperatures in certain sectors expected to drop as low as -3°C. This weather pattern is anticipated to cause frost and ice on rural roads and agricultural land. Recent reports confirm that the Coquimbo region is also expecting several days of rain, adding to the meteorological concerns for the northern and central parts of the country. SENAPRED has expanded preventive early warnings to include the Arica y Parinacota region, noting a moderate risk of landslides and debris flows in certain precordillera areas as weather fronts move from north to south. As the cold wave persists, the water utility Essbio has urged customers to protect water meters from freezing using insulating materials like cardboard, plastic, or styrofoam to prevent damage and supply disruptions.
