In late August 2026, reports emerged from Lahore regarding the alleged rape of a 15-year-old Christian domestic worker at gunpoint by her employer, Muhammad Mohsin. Although a First Information Report was filed and the suspect was briefly detained, Mohsin was later released after obtaining pre-arrest bail, prompting concerns from the victim’s family regarding the police investigation. By early September, reports indicated a broader surge in sexual violence cases across Lahore, involving multiple women and young girls. These incidents included gang rape, assault by former partners, and the abuse of a mentally challenged teenager. These developments occurred despite a stated “zero-tolerance policy” regarding gender-based violence by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Data from earlier in the year suggested a wider trend, with 3,172 cases of gender-based violence recorded across Pakistan during the first half of 2026. On September 10, a report highlighted that gender-based violence remains a “deep-rooted and multi-faceted challenge” in Pakistan. Despite existing anti-rape and domestic violence legislation, the report noted that prevention measures and conviction rates remain low. The persistence of such violence is attributed to a lack of political will, societal taboos, entrenched stereotypes, and judicial processes complicated by legal and procedural hurdles. Experts suggest that addressing the issue requires a multi-sectoral approach to dismantle the social ecosystem that nurtures violence against women.
