Sexually transmitted infection trends in Spain

Overview

In the Extremadura region of Spain, health authorities reported a significant rise in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) through late 2026. Data from the Servicio Extremeño de Salud (SES) indicated that cumulative figures for infections such as chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea were higher than the previous year, with an upward trajectory particularly noted among individuals aged 20 to 34.

However, broader national data from the National Epidemiology Center (CNE) and the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCII) suggested a different trend for the country. While infection rates remained high, the rapid decade-long surge in STIs appeared to have stabilized or slightly declined starting in 2025. While chlamydia continued to rise at a moderate rate, syphilis and lymphogranuloma venereum saw decreases, and gonorrhea rates stabilized. Experts attributed this deceleration to improved prevention efforts, better diagnostic tools, and increased detection through PrEP programs.
