Shakhtar Donetsk continues to play its UEFA Champions League home fixtures at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge in London due to the conflict in Ukraine. Club CEO Sergei Palkin noted the relocation is intended to show that Ukraine is “alive” and to serve Ukrainian refugees in England. On October 14, AEK Athens traveled to London to face Shakhtar Donetsk for the second matchday of the Champions League League Phase. AEK entered the match seeking a second consecutive win following a 1-0 victory against LASK Linz. Manager Marko Nikolić prepared a squad featuring striker Luka Jović, though goalkeeper Thomas Strakosia remained unavailable. Approximately 10,000 AEK supporters were expected to attend. In the senior match, AEK took an early lead in the 28th minute through Lovro Majer, following an assist from Stavros Pilios. However, Shakhtar equalized in the 34th minute via a penalty converted by Pedrinho following a VAR decision regarding a handball by Relvas. AEK manager Marko Nikolić expressed disappointment regarding the result and specific refereeing decisions, particularly the VAR-awarded penalty, though he noted satisfaction with his team’s offensive performance. Shakhtar secured a 3-1 victory with late goals from Vinícius Tobias in the 80th minute and Gleiker Mendoza in the 86th minute. Mendoza, who entered the match as a substitute in the 63rd minute, scored his second goal in the competition. This victory marked the first Champions League win for manager Arda Turan and established Shakhtar Donetsk as the first Ukrainian team to win a match played in England. The loss leaves AEK with zero points in the competition thus far and impacts Greece's standing in the UEFA coefficient rankings, leaving the country in 12th place. AEK now prepares for a match against Manchester City, while Shakhtar Donetsk looks ahead to facing Inter Milan.
