Comedian Shane Gillis drew significant criticism following his hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live on October 10. During his monologue, Gillis made derogatory remarks regarding women’s gym attire, specifically stating, “I didn’t know women just dress like whores now.” Actor Dan Levy condemned the comments as misogynistic, stating that men who use such language are ‘misogynists’ and expressing that he was ‘speechless’ that these remarks were made on live national television. Levy further noted that the issue is an “everyday issue” rather than just a women’s issue. Former SNL cast members responded via social media; Ego Nwodim used a gym selfie with the caption ‘whore reporting for duty’ to address the comments, while Cecily Strong also responded to the monologue. Other public figures, including Jenna Bush Hager, singer-songwriter Derek Webb, and singer Maren Morris, voiced criticism. Actress Martha Plimpton criticized SNL creator Lorne Michaels, suggesting the program requires more women in decision-making roles. While Gillis issued an apology to the audience for an accidental expletive during a sketch, he has not publicly apologized for the remarks regarding women’s clothing. SNL cast member Michael Che has defended the segment, telling the Today Show, “It’s like, you think it’s funny and some people don’t.” ~~Che noted he did not process the moment during the live broadcast as he was focused on his own cue cards.~~ On October 18, the controversy reached SNL UK, where comedian Ania Magliano delivered a verbal rebuke toward Gillis during the Weekend Update segment. ~~The incident has also prompted discussions regarding SNL’s editorial decisions and Gillis’s history of controversial content.~~ On October 20, former SNL cast member Dana Carvey defended Gillis during an appearance on the ‘Fly on the Wall’ podcast. Carvey expressed confusion over the backlash, stating, “I just didn’t understand the kerfuffle, only because to me, I just saw it as what we call... a joke!”
