Sheinbaum advances fracking pilots and reforestation
Entities: Claudia Sheinbaum · Tampico‑Misantla basin · Alejandro Armenta Mier · United States · Coahuila
Overview
In early August 2026 President Claudia Sheinbaum moved forward on two contrasting domestic fronts. She ordered a 54‑expert panel to review pilot hydraulic‑fracturing projects in Coahuila and Tamaulipas and presented the committee’s ten recommendations. The key points include accelerating renewable electricity, improving energy efficiency, increasing conventional gas output, banning hydraulic fracturing in the densely populated Tampico‑Misantla basin, using only saline water, recycling at least 75 % of that water, avoiding toxic chemicals, and conducting public consultations. All studies will be posted on a dedicated microsite with bi‑monthly updates.
The pilots, targeting basins such as Burgos, Sabinas‑Burro‑Picachos and others, could start as early as September 2026, pending confirmation of saline‑water reservoirs. Pemex currently produces roughly 4.87 billion cubic feet of natural gas and 1.66 million barrels of oil per day, and the pilots aim to raise domestic gas output to reduce Mexico’s reliance on U.S. imports, which supply about three‑quarters of its consumption.
On 9 August Sheinbaum inaugurated National Reforestation Day from Puebla’s Izta‑Popo National Park, coordinating a simultaneous planting effort across all 32 states. The campaign targets 32,182 hectares, with 6.7 million trees, shrubs and herbs to be planted and 1.7 million seeds sown, building on the eight‑year Sembrando Vida program that has already placed 1.2 billion trees. Drones supplied by CONALEP will assist, and officials expect over 235,000 participants, underscoring the administration’s dual focus on expanding domestic energy production while addressing deforestation and biodiversity concerns.
