Shell Niger Delta pollution and divestment dispute

In late July 2026, internal Shell documents released in a UK legal case showed the company continued operating the Nembe Creek Trunk Line in Nigeria’s Niger Delta despite warnings that the pipeline violated its own technical standards. The 60-mile line, which can move up to 150,000 barrels of crude per day, runs near the Bille community in Bayelsa State. A coalition of human-rights and environmental groups, led by Amnesty International Nigeria, reported that 375 km² of mangrove forest have been damaged and estimated a US$10.9 billion decommissioning cost for Shell’s onshore assets. Affected communities filed a US$1 billion compensation claim, seeking US$750 million for clean-up, while Shell rejected the accusations. A Nigerian Federal High Court dismissed a related lawsuit by the Ekpetiama Kingdom on procedural grounds, leaving the case open to appeal.

Amnesty International’s broader investigation linked decades of Shell’s operations—active since 1958 across roughly 50 fields—to a human-rights crisis involving oil spills, gas flaring, and waste dumping. The report noted that the company has exploited weak local regulations, jeopardizing the health and livelihoods of millions. This struggle echoes the historic activism of Ken Saro-Wiwa and the ‘Ogoni Nine’.

More recently, rights advocates have criticized Shell’s divestment from its Niger Delta oil business, labeling the process ‘irresponsible.’ The African Law Foundation (AfriLaw) alleged that Shell and the Nigerian Federal Government sidelined host communities during the transfer of assets and liabilities. AfriLaw has called on the National Human Rights Commission to initiate a remediation process to ensure environmental legacies and compensation obligations are not abandoned.
