Shellfish harvesting restrictions in Chiloé
Overview
Health authorities in the Los Lagos region of Chile have implemented a preventive closure of maritime areas in Bahía Terao, within the Chonchi commune of Chiloé, due to the detection of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxins. Toxin levels were recorded at 100, which exceeds the legal limit of 80.
The restriction prohibits the extraction, sale, and consumption of all affected marine resources, specifically targeting areas involving mussel harvesting concessions. Officials from the Seremi de Salud have warned that these toxins cannot be neutralized by cooking and have advised the public to only purchase seafood from authorized establishments.
To enforce the ban, the Chilean Navy has increased surveillance using aircraft and vessels, while Carabineros conduct land-based controls. Sernapesca noted that the most recent harvest at the affected center took place in July, and any products intended for commercial use must now undergo mandatory toxicological analysis.
