Former New Mexico Democratic legislator and Albuquerque Public Schools administrator Sheryl Williams Stapleton has faced legal proceedings regarding a scheme to divert public school funds.

Initially, Williams Stapleton was convicted on dozens of federal charges. Prosecutors demonstrated that she used her role as career and technical education director to direct over $3 million to Robotics Management Learning Systems LLC, a company owned by her co-defendant, Joseph Johnson. The scheme involved diverting federal vocational education funds, with Johnson allegedly providing blank checks that Williams Stapleton used for personal benefit.

Following the federal conviction, Williams Stapleton pleaded guilty to state charges, including fraud and money laundering. Under a plea agreement, most state charges will be dropped in exchange for a 10.5-year prison sentence and more than $1.8 million in restitution. Williams Stapleton resigned from her position in 2021 after search warrants were executed at her residence.
