Shinkansen service and pricing updates

Overview

JR Central and other operators are implementing several changes to Shinkansen services on the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu lines.

Starting in spring 2028, the ‘EX Service’ online platform will allow passengers to purchase reserved seats for extra trains deployed during natural disasters, such as typhoons or heavy rain. This aims to reduce platform queuing, as these extra trains currently utilize only non-reserved seating.

Additionally, price increases for reserved seats on ‘Nozomi’ and ‘Mizuho’ trains are scheduled for July 1, 2027, driven by inflation and service maintenance costs. Green Car fares will see further adjustments starting December 15, 2027.

Looking toward long-term infrastructure, JR Central announced the ‘S0 Series’ next-generation Shinkansen model. Scheduled for commercial operation in July 2029, the model will feature the ‘GOA2’ automated driving system, improved earthquake detection, and reduced power consumption.
