Shohei Ohtani gambling fraud controversy

In late July 2026, a new ESPN podcast highlighted that Shohei Ohtani’s name resurfaced in a gambling‑related investigation after a covert meeting linked two $500,000 transfers to bookmaker Matthew Bowyer. The report tied the inquiry to the earlier Ippei Mizuhara case, where the former Dodgers interpreter had impersonated Ohtani to move millions and was later convicted of bank fraud. Authorities had previously cleared Ohtani of any involvement.

A few days later, an ESPN audio documentary released an extensive interview with Mizuhara, during which he repeated false claims that Ohtani had agreed to settle his gambling debts and had personally authorized large transfers. Investigators confirmed that Mizuhara had illegally moved roughly $17 million from accounts bearing Ohtani’s name between 2021 and 2024.
