Shopify has expanded its integration of artificial intelligence to assist with both transaction management and store design. Initially, the company enabled WebMCP support to allow browser-based AI agents to manage the final stages of the checkout process. These agents can read order details, update shipping addresses or discount codes, and submit orders, though they require human intervention for payment authentication and cannot input new credit card details. This functionality is supported by tools such as ‘get_checkout’ and ‘complete_checkout’ and has been utilized through partnerships with agents like Meta’s Muse and Instinct. Following these transactional updates, Shopify launched Canvas, a visual design workspace. This tool uses the ‘Sidekick’ AI agent to translate conversational descriptions into real-time modifications of a store’s Liquid code. Canvas provides an interactive interface where users can view their entire storefront and zoom into specific sections, seeing changes rendered on actual theme code rather than static mockups. Sidekick can perform tasks such as generating Liquid code, taking screenshots to inspect its own work, and remembering design preferences. According to Shopify product lead Ben Sehl, the tool can reduce the time required to build a custom store from weeks to approximately twenty minutes. The rollout, which began in early October 2026, offers an intuitive alternative to traditional no-code editors by allowing direct chat-based instructions alongside manual element editing. Shopify is further evolving its ecosystem through the introduction of Shop MCP, a connection based on the Model Context Protocol. This allows AI agents or applications to search the Shopify catalog, build shopping carts, and complete purchases using Shop Pay. This shift toward ‘agentic commerce’ places increased importance on well-structured product titles, descriptions, and attributes to ensure AI comprehension across catalogs containing over one billion products.
