To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Japanese publisher Shueisha launched ‘Manga Million’, a digital platform providing free access to approximately 400 manga titles and one million pages. The service, which requires no registration, is available worldwide through the end of 2027 and offers content in over 100 languages. The collection includes major series such as ‘One Piece’, ‘Naruto’, ‘Bleach’, ‘Demon Slayer’, and ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’. To improve accessibility for ongoing series, Shueisha planned to implement a ‘near-simultaneous distribution’ mechanism in mid-August, allowing roughly 30 serialized titles to be available on the platform within two to three weeks of their official Japanese publication. The rollout has faced scrutiny regarding its translation methods. While Shueisha’s editorial team stated that the work was performed by human translators, some users identified the involvement of firms like Flitto Japan Inc. and EC Innovations, which utilize AI-assisted tools. This has led to debates among readers regarding the accuracy of the publisher’s claims after some reported ‘awkward phrasing’ in the translations. Recent investigations into the project’s official credits have intensified community speculation regarding the use of machine translation. While Flitto Japan provides professional human localization, its role as a provider of AI-based translation and localization solutions has fueled doubts. Shueisha has not yet issued a follow-up statement clarifying the specific technologies used for the various titles.
