During the 58th National Congress of the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Clinical Biology (SIBioC) in Rimini, experts and the Italian Ministry of Health addressed the necessity of standardizing laboratory data to advance digital healthcare. The discussion focused on evolving the Electronic Health Record (EHR 2.0) from a repository of static digitized documents into a functional system utilizing structured, interoperable data. This transition is intended to align with the European Health Data Space (EHDS) initiative, which seeks to establish common standards for secure electronic health data use across Europe. Implementing international standards, such as LOINC, was identified as a method to ensure laboratory exams can be uniquely identified and compared across different facilities. Key objectives include ensuring that diagnostic data can be transferred and utilized across different systems and facilities without losing clinical meaning, transforming the Electronic Health Record (Fascicolo Sanitario Elettronico) into a dynamic tool that supports patients throughout their healthcare journey. Achieving interoperability is expected to facilitate early diagnosis, personalized care, medical research, and improved epidemiological planning. A SIBioC survey identified several obstacles to this digital transition, including fragmented information systems, communication difficulties between platforms, limited professional knowledge, training deficiencies, and insufficient involvement of laboratory professionals. Achieving interoperability is expected to facilitate early diagnosis, personalized care, medical research, and improved epidemiological planning.
