Mimmo Turano, the Sicilian Regional Minister for Education and Training, has initiated a series of school visits across provinces including Ragusa, Syracuse, Caltanissetta, Enna, Trapani, and Palermo to inaugurate the academic year and gather feedback from administrators. These meetings address several systemic challenges, including the need for increased operating funds, combating educational poverty, and reducing student dropout rates. The Minister is also focusing on student emotional well-being and addiction prevention through the @LabSchool project. A key component of this initiative is the launch of an anti-violence project featuring “listening desks” (sportelli ascolto) within schools. This program aims to provide dedicated spaces for dialogue to intercept social and familial distress before it escalates into classroom violence. The plan, which may involve university cooperation, is expected to move into an operational phase following the next regional budget maneuver. As the 2026/2027 academic year begins, Turano has continued these consultations, specifically meeting with principals in Ragusa and Syracuse. Organized by the Sicilian Region and the Regional School Office (USR Sicilia), these sessions serve to assess initiatives implemented over the previous four years. New priorities identified include energy efficiency in school buildings and support measures for women and minors from organized crime backgrounds under the ‘Liberi di scegliere’ law. These discussions are intended to inform the upcoming General States of Education scheduled for October in Palermo.
