On 29 July 2026 a small motorboat departing from Malta suffered engine failure near Marina di Ragusa, Sicily. Four occupants – three Maltese men and a 13‑year‑old boy – were aboard. While two passengers left to search for fuel, the remaining adult and the teenager threw sealed bundles containing roughly €660‑700 000 into the sea as the Italian Coast Guard approached. Beachgoers retrieved most of the cash, and a coordinated police operation later recovered virtually the entire amount. Police forces, including the Carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza, joined the Coast Guard in securing the beach and recovering the cash. The vessel was seized and taken to port for forensic and technical examination. All four individuals have been identified, questioned and detained. The Ragusa prosecutor’s office opened a criminal investigation into the money’s origin, examining possible links to money‑laundering, drug‑related payments or counterfeit currency.
