Infrastructure maintenance and safety concerns are escalating in Sicily. Following previous cleaning efforts on state roads SS 561 and SS 117 bis in Enna, scheduled pavement maintenance continues at the Lentini junction on the Catania-Siracusa motorway, involving nighttime closures between 21:00 and 06:00. Safety concerns have intensified following a fatal accident on the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway. On October 4, 38-year-old Francesco Nicolosi died near the Falcone junction at kilometer 57+700 while traveling toward Palermo. Preliminary investigations by the Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto Highway Police suggest the rider lost control of his Yamaha TMax scooter in a solo accident. Reports indicate that prior to the crash, Nicolosi had been conducting a Facebook Live broadcast from his scooter. In response to high accident rates, police have announced speed enforcement operations on the A18 and A20 motorways from October 5 to 11. On October 21, labor unions CGIL, Filt, and Fillea Sicilia organized protests involving car caravans on the A18 and A20 motorways. Protesters at the Calatabiano service area criticized legal disputes between political bodies and concession companies, arguing that institutional conflicts compromise citizen safety. CGIL Sicily Secretary Alfio Mannino criticized the regional government for allocating 13 million euros toward safety measures, contrasting it with 50 million euros allegedly spent on clientelistic measures. Additionally, a violent collision between two vehicles occurred near the San Cono tunnel on the A20, leaving two people injured. While the impact was severe, authorities reported the injuries were not life-threatening. Furthermore, the region faces significant infrastructure challenges. As of October 3, the deadline for urgent repairs on the A18 and A20 motorways has passed. The Ministry of Infrastructure previously warned that failing to address critical tunnel repairs could necessitate traffic closures. While regional authorities have secured approximately 34.5 million euros for immediate requirements, the long-term restoration cost is estimated at 5.5 billion euros over a ten-year period.
