A few days later, in early August 2026, anti‑mafia police in Messina carried out a coordinated operation that placed twelve suspects under precautionary measures for manipulating public procurement across Sicily and Calabria. The suspects were accused of running a shadow company that colluded with awarded firms on highway works, lighting installations, hydraulic projects and energy upgrades. The operation broadened the scope of the ongoing anti‑corruption effort, linking the Messina network to the same systemic infiltration of public contracts highlighted in the Agrigento case.
