In late July, regional water officials and municipal representatives met to plan for the summer peak, agreeing to request an additional 30 L/s of water from Siciliacque to balance demand. To support industrial growth, the Sicilian regional government approved the reallocation of €7.2 million to modernize the water-supply network in the Etna Valley industrial zone, specifically the Pantano d’Arci well field, to support the ‘Campus Sic’ semiconductor project. To address immediate needs, the region allocated €787,500 for new water tankers in Agrigento, managed by Aica, following a month-long strike over operational rules. By September, the crisis escalated into legal and technical emergencies. The National Academy for Alfa Training and Promotion of Culture, Work and Social (ANAFePC) initiated legal action against 19 municipalities, including Agrigento, Enna, Siracusa, and Gela, for failing to respond to transparency requests. ANAFePC filed appeals with the National Anti-Corruption Authority and the Court of Auditors, seeking data on pipeline leaks, the status of PNRR-funded construction sites, and water rationing criteria. In some areas, service interruptions have lasted up to 20 days. In Trapani, authorities are coordinating an emergency response to water contamination within the city’s distribution network. Following a meeting convened by Prefect Daniela Lupo, technical departments and Civil Protection have worked to ensure substitute water services are fulfilled within 24 to 48 hours. Regional Deputy Cristina Ciminnisi has criticized the management of the emergency, noting that the prolonged situation is testing the patience of citizens and highlighting the need for definitive solutions to ensure access to water. As of mid-September, the response in Trapani has expanded to include the Italian Armed Forces to assist Civil Protection in distributing potable water via tankers. In Siracusa, electrical micro-interruptions have caused pipe failures, resulting in temporary water pressure drops in the Ortigia and Borgata areas.
