Sierra Leone-China maritime joint venture
Overview
Sierra Leone has launched the Sierra Leone Ocean Shipping Company (SLOSCo) in Freetown through a joint venture with China’s Zhejiang Xiehai Group. Under the agreement, the Chinese partner holds a 70% stake, while the Sierra Leone National Shipping Agency retains 30%.
The initiative aims to increase the nation’s participation in international maritime trade and reduce reliance on foreign carriers for the export and import of goods, including minerals, agricultural products, and petroleum. The company plans to develop a fleet of 50 vessels, starting with an initial phase of 30 ships. To support the venture, the Chinese partner will provide access to its existing fleet of 37 vessels, primarily bulk carriers.
