Sierra Leone digital and information governance

Overview

Sierra Leone is focusing on strengthening its digital and information ecosystems through infrastructure development and governance initiatives.

The government is working toward digital sovereignty by integrating energy, telecommunications, and data infrastructure. Key achievements include a digital ID system covering over 93 percent of the population, alongside efforts to scale national payment switches and data exchange platforms. Officials aim to reduce reliance on external providers by building domestic expertise to manage digital public infrastructure.

In tandem with these technical advancements, the nation is addressing information integrity. During the 17th International Conference of Information Commissioners, leaders emphasized that access to information is vital for democratic governance and public trust. Discussions have centered on combating misinformation and disinformation in the digital age, with calls for institutional transparency to ensure accurate information remains accessible.
