Sierra Leone football competition suspensions

Following violent clashes in Kroo Town Road after a football match between Kroo Town Road and Kossoh Town, the Sierra Leonean Ministry of Sports suspended all community and school soccer competitions in the Western Area. The unrest reportedly resulted in three deaths and several injuries. One casualty, a local trader, was reportedly struck by a stray bullet during a police response to an assault. The Independent Police Complaints Board (IPCB) launched an investigation into the discharge of firearms by officers and alleged assaults by police personnel.

As the situation progressed, the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Authority finalized a ban on all community and school football competitions in the Western Area, including Freetown. This decision followed a high-level stakeholder meeting led by National Security Coordinator Abdulai Caulker, prompted by a surge in youth violence and hooliganism linked to football activities, specifically those organized by the Central One Football Association (COFA). Authorities noted that recent clashes caused loss of life and property destruction valued at millions of Leones. The ban is enforced by security agencies, though informal, non-competitive matches for recreational purposes remain permitted.
