A multi-state E. coli outbreak has been linked to Sierra Nevada Graziers brand raw milk cheeses. The outbreak has resulted in at least 13 reported illnesses across approximately ten states, including California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Michigan. Health officials report that eight individuals have been hospitalized, with three developing hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe condition that can lead to kidney failure. The outbreak has disproportionately affected young children, with the average age of those infected being five years old. In response, Sierra Nevada Cheese Company has initiated a voluntary nationwide recall of its Graziers brand raw milk cheeses. The recalled varieties include medium cheddar, sharp cheddar, jalapeƱo jack, and Monterey jack, which were sold in 8-ounce, 16-ounce, and 5-pound formats. Recent updates specify that the illnesses are caused by Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, with investigations by the FDA and CDC identifying a potential contamination of E. coli O26:H11. While the New Mexico Department of Health has issued warnings to residents, they have reported no confirmed cases within that state as of late September 2026.
